Ute mountain tribal park: tour of ancestral puebloan ruins with a ute native american guide
What fun it was to camp out for a night and experience an unforgettable place together just south of the Mesa Verde N.P. border line! We all had a great time, and based on student write-ups and chats about the trip, we learned a lot of new things, too! The drive and camping experience definitely brought the community closer together... we had some good laughs around the campfire, and those night games were hilarious. The tour the next morning lead us up a series of long ladders into some breathtaking places with untouched dwellings in Lion Canyon, and rock panels along the dirt roads. It involved multiple long ladders. We were privileged to hear a song, and many native stories/philosophies, as well.

Michelangelo:
Artist of the 1st trimester with Madame Doodle
We are studying the legendary Michelangelo with Madame Doodle and how he gridded and painted the Sistine Chapel's ceiling. We will step into his shoes as we portray a section of the Chapel's ceiling, and work the same manner as Michelangelo had to....upside down (and 64 ft. up in the air on a tall ladder while often arguing with the Pope...but I think we'll skip that part)!

dead horse point and C.C.O.E. rangers in the classroom! Preparing for the Field
|
Ranger Jim from Dead Horse Point presented to us and did social study activities with our class over the course of 3 days. He shared with us information regarding ancient cultures, ancient climates, and how climate and other factors influenced the way ancient civilizations lived and changed over time. We await our field trip to Dead Horse Point with the park rangers at the end of the month of September!
|
Rangers from the Canyon Country Outdoor Education (C.C.O.E.) introduce us to the world of microorganisms with a matching game! We await our field trip to Arches National Park to explore more organisms found in the desert's potholes and those that cling to the rocks.

"Seedfolks" - Paul FleishmanChapter by chapter, each character describes the transformation of an empty lot into a vibrant community garden. "In doing se, they each experience their own transformations."
This opened the doors for us to talk about diversity, prejudice, social barriers, self-esteem, and community. "Thirteen very different voices and perspectives—old, young, Haitian, Hispanic, tough, haunted, and hopeful—tell one amazing story about a garden that transforms a neighborhood" |
Stay tuned: "seedfolks II"
We've created new characters to include in Seedfolks, and have each written at 14th chapter...

Our Graduation Song:
"We Can Change The World" Lyrics and Song Written by: Molly Knowles and Kelsey Gritts Produced by: Jon Olschewski Studio Seventy-7 Verse 1 After everything that's done, Dream and hope wishing for not none, We can change the world, Knowing that we've got a choice, Open up and hear the voice, We can change the world Chorus We can change the world, We can change the world, We can change the world Verse 2 You can see the fate in their eyes, A silver dot that questions the mind, We can change the world, Put your hands in your heart, Listen to the other part, We can change the world Chorus We can change the world, We can change the world, We can change the world Bridge And after everyday in my dreams, I hear a sailor, Sailing the sea, I hear that voice, In my head Verse 1 After everything that's done, Dream and hope wishing for not none, We can change the world Chorus X2 |

give em' 5 food drive-
6TH GRADE'S ORGANIZED EVENT surpasses 600 lbs. goal by over 200 lbs. of food!
$1,000 GOES TOWARDS 6TH GRADE'S SPRING TRIP!
$1,000 GOES TO M.C.S.
giving thanksStudents practiced basic paragraph and essay writing with an appropriate November topic sentence of: Things I am grateful for.
In math, students are measuring and collecting data daily on the current food drive going on. This involves measuring the previous day's food donations on a scale, recording the amount on a double bar graph, coloring in an area model in the lunch rom, displaying the remaining amount of lbs. needed in order to reach our goal, calculating and displaying the percentage of the goal reached, and what percentage of the pledge money donation has been earned so far. Additionally, students are working in small groups to plan a fictitious Thanksgiving dinner party. Students are astounded at how much math and planning goes into throwing a dinner party. Using local shoppers, students must remain in budget, and serve a hot, cooked meal by the time their 8-10 guests arrive. Receipts must be produced, of course, and include sales tax. Invitation lists have been sent out! I hope Michael Jackson and Albert Einstein can make it! |
^^Made it into the local news!
"MCS food drive...Sixth grade students at Moab Charter School are organizing a food drive to help stock the Grand County Food Bank's shelves for the upcoming holidays. During the school-wide food drive, MCS students in all grades hope to collect 600 pounds in non-perishable food donations by November 23rd. According to school officials, if that goal is met, the school will receive a $1,000 donations from a person who wishes to remain anonymous, and the sixth-grade class will also receive a $1,000 donation to help cover the cost of an upcoming class trip to Mesa Verde and the Crow Canon Archaeological Center. The students began their efforts on November 9th. Food Donations can be dropped off at the Moab Charter School's main office, located at 358 East 300 South, between the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday." |

A Halloween party to always be remembered!
We played glow in the dark capture the flag and listened to spooky tales under the park pavilion with pizza in our hands. Our friendly, local magician and parent put on a wicked magic show that made us want to hide and cry for more at the same time. Yummy brains, and other baked goods kept our blood sugar high as we watched a movie, played games and listened to some minor snoring. A hot-served waffle breakfast was on point, thanks to our loving parents. And, lastly, after a final game of ghost in the graveyard we parted ways... while Ms. O ran in MCS 5k fundraiser and took 2nd place! Thanks to everybody who held the dragon while you cheered for the participants.
This party was absolutely necessary. We learned so much about each other and it helped build our friendship and classroom community. <3 |
We are over 2 months into our school year, and currently inquiring into the social studies theme of freedom and what it means to ourselves and others, present and past.
Students have the month of October to enter essays on the VFW's chosen theme: "What Freedom Means to Me," to the annual "Patriot's Pen" national, essay-writing contest. Students can win anywhere between $500-5,000 if their essay is chosen to represent the State of Utah, in addition to receiving a flight to Washington D.C. for the announcement of the Nation's top essay writer. Additionally, the top 6th grade essay writer in our class will win a surprise award! Parent support is greatly appreciated!
In order for students to become more aware and to understand their daily privileges and freedoms, we will be stripping them away during an in-class discrimination simulation. Students and Parents are encouraged to watch the 45-minute feature of the famous "Brown Eyes, Blue Eyes experiment" together: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/divided/etc/view.html
In math, 6th graders are getting into the depths of statistics and brushing up skills on fractions and percentages. Students have used authentic data collected on their science trip in Arches National Park--Looking at algae's growth on north and south facing slopes--to help them complete a group statistics project.

A little Forensic Science.... and our unique fingerprint formula
Arches National park: exploring organisms found in potholes and rocky slopes
Collecting Data and displaying data in an appropriate way |
microorganism unit launcherOn Left: How are bacteria populations effected while the host takes antibiotics? What happens to the resistant bacteria, highly resistant bacteria, and extremely resistant bacteria over time? This engaging simulation had students tossing a die to determine whether or not their sick patient remembered to take his or her antibiotics. After following certain procedures to simulate the effects, students then recorded bacteria population data and graphed the results on a time line.
Above & Below: Parent Microbiologist, Jessica, conducts an activity with 6th grade using "Glo Germ" and a black light to see how quickly germs spread from person to person (and how to best scrub hands with soap in order to get rid of them). Don't forget to get the backs of your hands! Students asked great questions leading into discussions about the body's immune system.

SEPTEMBER^^On the Left:
We have some culinary artists this year! The Youth Garden Project invited students to a healthy, snacking adventure. Responsibilities needed to prepare 3 simple recipes were divvied up, starting with a seasonal harvest. Samples and reflections followed. A surprise for some: healthy eating can be tasty, too! Peanut-butter-cinnamon dip was spotted at school the following day. |
Above: We created and memorized moves for all 20 of our names! We shared a lot of laughs and heavy breathing as we worked our way around the circle! We're weird and wacky and love it!
A great start: moving, dancing, singing, & playing!AUGUST^^ |
First Days of SchoolWe've got rhythm! Students did great keeping the beat in music today! Our new music teacher, Mr. Sand, is awesome and even wrote us a song so we can sing our "Pledge of Respect" at Morning Circle! We'll keep practicing.
Playing a competitive game of Capture the Flag with our new P.E. Teacher, Mr. Patrick! Some of us have quite the arm and speed!
